Context & origins.

Vaporwave is an internet-born music culture that surfaced in online forums in the 2010s, partly as a satire of chillwave and synthwave, built from slowed and chopped samples of smooth jazz, R&B and elevator music. Its visuals suggest a deserted 1980s shopping mall, mixing bright colours, blurred images, checkered tiles, obsolete technology, horizons, Greek sculpture, 3D renders and anime references. The resulting mood is melancholy and nostalgic, and scholars often read it as a critique of consumerism.
