StyleResearch overview

Brutalist web design.

Exposed structure, blunt typography and deliberately plain controls give the interface a direct, unvarnished character.

How to recognize it.

  1. Visible page structure
  2. Hard edges
  3. Unembellished links

Context & origins.

Web brutalism is a contested movement in contemporary web interaction design that pushes back against the standardised visual conventions that dominate the web. A 2017 paper in the journal Dialectic, summarised by the AIGA Design Educators Community, presents it as a debate. One side sees it as a welcome rejection of templates and one-size-fits-all design. The other argues it distracts from pressing accessibility and usability problems. Brutalist sites are described as deliberately intense and coarse.

Historical context draws on the supplied research. Approximate periods are reference ranges, not fixed boundaries. See the source notes below.

In practice.

Keep navigation, focus states and reading order predictable.

What to watch for

Intentional roughness is no excuse for inaccessible controls or broken layouts.
